COLLEGE HISTORY

A measure of significance of Barrackpore Rastraguru Surendranath College is the fact that though it has travelled a long way since its humble beginnings in 1953, it has not settled into the smugness of a middle initially held at Debiprasad High School until 1954 when the premises at 6, Riverside Road were obtained by the College authorities on rent. In 1969 feeling the need to have its own premises the college bought a piece of land at 85, Middle Road which now houses the arts and science faculties. Initially Pre-University and science classes were held in this building.

At that time it was a far cry from the impeccably clean, sprawling building which has increasingly come to be identified with the new face of the college. For this one had to wait many more years. In 1979 the Govt. of West Bengal sanctioned the plan of the new building and agreed to bear the entire cost. The construction actually started in the eighties and since then it has been a story of uninterrupted and steady growth.

The premises at 6, Riverside Road, owned by the Wesleyan Methodist Mission Trust, were donated to the college in 1984 and no objection certificate was obtained from the Defence Ministry in 1997 as a result of untiring support from all quarters and intervention of public figures as well as private individuals. This building now houses the Commerce department while the Administrative Building, the Arts and Science Departments operate from 85, Middle Road.

Over the years the College has consolidated its position as one of the premier institutions in Barrackpore imparting learning in diverse areas of Humanities, Commerce, Basic and Applied Sciences. Honours courses are available in 15 different disciplines and include, apart from the traditional courses, Microbiology, Computer Science and Electronics. A modern subject like Journalism has been introduced at the General level. The College offers counselling facilities to students and has incorporated in its routines along with regularly held tutorial classes. Academic calendars are distributed to the students at the beginning of the session to give them a prior idea of the break up of course of study and lectures for each subject. Health service is provided at the health centre which is attended by the general Physicians and Specialists. Besides this the College is a universal member of Students' Health Home. A well provisioned students' canteen is there to supply food at reasonable prices. A Grievance Redressal Cell has been constituted for the students and staff.

Most of the routine office work has been computerised. Apart from this the College runs three Computer Laboratories where students can hone their skills and prepare themselves for a successful career in Information Technology. Internet facilities are also available at the introductory phase. This allows students to have access to information and data from the wired world and makes the College an integral part of the knowledge-based global village.
