About Climatological Section

Climatology Section(CS), is the nodal unit of Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC), Chennai that undertakes the Climatological practices pertaining to RMC, Chennai. CS is the sole custodian of meteorological data pertaining to the Southern region. The major activities of  CS can be broadly classified into Three :

• Data Scrutiny and Tabulation
• Electronic Data Entry, Verification and Dissemination of Data to National Data Centre, Pune
• Data Supply to various user communities

Types of Meteorological Data

• Rainfall (Hourly*, Daily, Monthly, Annual, Sub-divistional, Heavy Spells in 24Hrs Etc.)

• Temperature (Hourly*, Daily, Monthly, Maximum & Minimum, Extreme Values Etc)

• Relative Humidity (Hourly*, Daily, Monthly)

• Surface Wind speed and directions

• Bright Sunshine Hours (Hourly*)

• Station Level/Mean Sea Level Pressure(Hourly*, Daily, Monthly)

• Amount and types of clouds observerd (Twice daily / 8 times daily)

• Various Weather phenomenon such as, visibility, occurrence of Thunderstorm etc

• Climate Normals based on 1951-80 and 1961-90(in final stage of preparation) data.

• Weather Reports on specific weather phenomenon such as heavy rainfall, storm etc

• Windrose diagrams for selected stations

* Available only for selected stations

Apart from the above data, there are various other special data that can be obtained from NDC, Pune and supplied to the needy users, some of them are :

• Air-pollution data such as turbidity and precipitation chemistry for selected Global Atmospheric Watch stations in India(10 Stations).
• Mixing height levels for selected stations
• Radiation data (Global, Total and diffusive)
• Upper-air data (Vertical Profile of the atmosphere) for selected stations
• Ozone data for selected stations
• Agro-meteorological data, such as soil temperature, evapo-transpiration etc.,) for selected stations.
• Monsoon Experiment data, (MONEX, BOBMEX, ARMEX etc)

Procedure to get the Data

Send the data request with the following particulars.

• Type & Frequency of data - (For example, Daily Temperature, Monthly Rainfall, Hourly RH, Normal(Long-period average) Wind speed etc)
• Period of Requirement of data - (For example, Jan, 1985 to Dec, 2005; Only November, December and January data for the years 1995 and 1996; Recent 15 years Etc.)
• List of Stations - Stations for which data is required.

Once the above three factors are finalised, send your request by post /e-mail / in-person. to the following address. All data requests should be addressed to

"The Deputy Director General of Meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, New No.6, College Road, Nungambakkam, CHENNAI - 600 006"

On receiving your request, this office will process your request and a 'Charge Intimation Letter', containing the availability of data, cost of data and payment mode etc., and 'Certificate of Undertaking' will be sent to you.

Finally, the following documents are to be sent to get the data

1. Duly filled and signed Data Request Form (If it is not provided in the initial correspondences.

2. Demand Draft(DD) for the amount mentioned in the Charge Intimation Letter. Payment made in the form of Cash / Money order WILL NOT be accepted.

3. Duly signed 'Certificate of Undertaking'

On receiving the above mentioned documents, this office will retrieve/compile the required data and the same will be sent as early as possible.

Terms and Conditions and Disclaimer

• The Data Request Form provided in this site  may be used for sending the data requests together with a formal requesting letter in the letter head of the institution/office/organisation to ensure the identity of the user.

• Initial correspondences, such as availability of particular data or station etc may be sent via, e-mails.

• Normally data are supplied on payment basis. Payment should be made through a Banker's DD favouring 'The Asst. Met (C&A), RMC, Chennai', payable at Chennai.

• The amount mentioned in the Charge Intimation Letter(CIL) is ONLY for the data specified in the CIL and whatever may be the actual request. Because, CIL is prepared on the basis of availability of data and stations. Hence, users are instructed to go through the CIL carefully and if they are interested in getting the data mentioned therein then only they should make payment DD.

• The amount paid against a data request is not refundable under any circumstances and hence before making any payment, users are requested to ensure themselves about the same.

• Supply of data will be considered on case by case and DDGM, RMC, Chennai and ADGM(Research), Pune reserves the right to accept or decline any data request on public interest.

• The data supplied to an user is only meant for the purpose mentioned in their request letter and in no case the data be parted and handed over to any other user for any other purpose.

• Though maximum care is taken at various stages in collecting, scrutinizing and compiling the data, there could be some errors in the data due to instrumental and technical reasons.
