LIFELINE FOUNDATION, a non-profit charitable trust, runs a free telephone helpline service in Calcutta for people who are feeling depressed, distressed or suicidal. The service is run by a group of volunteers. We are ordinary people from diverse backgrounds and are carefully selected and trained for the support we offer. We are available between 10:00am to 6:00pm every day of the year. LIFELINE offers sympathetic, caring and confidential support. We are not religiously, politically or otherwise biased and are there for everyone from all walks of life, irrespective of their age, faith or sex. One can share his innermost feelings with us without fear of criticism or judgement. One needn't even tell us his name.

Lifeline is a probationary member of Befrienders International, which has 350 suicide prevention centres world-wide.

You can help by: -

Becoming a volunteer - If you are above 20 years of age, fluent in speaking Bengali, English & Hindi, a good listener, open minded and willing to spare four hours of your time every week for your fellow human beings, you are welcome to apply.

Spreading awareness - You can always help us by telling your friends, family, colleagues and acquaintances about our free service. Whenever you see someone feeling depressed or maybe suicidal, pass on our telephone numbers to that person. You can also do this by discreetly leaving one of our ad-cuttings, calendars or brochures in a place where the concerned person is bound to notice it.
