INAUGURATION OF 'CARLA STUDENTS HOME'

THE FOUNDER
The Ven. Acharya Buddharakkhita Maha Thera, a senior monk of profound erudition and deep insight into the teaching of the Enlightened One established in 1956 the Maha Bodhi Society (MBS) at Bangalore,South India, with an aim not only to make known the teaching of the Buddha, but also to provide the inspiration and facilities for putting that teaching into practice through spiritual, social, educational activities.

Following are our activities

SANGHARAMA
A Bhikkhu-training center where motivated young men are given intensive training to qualify as capable and experienced teachers of Dhamma and Meditation is functioning from the outset.

RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL
About sixty boys are being brought up in the residential school which provides free boarding, loading, education and health care. The boys in addition to going through the standard syllabi are given training in moral behavior, fundamentals of Dhamma, chanting and meditation, gardening and cooking etc.

MEDITATION CENTER
The Society’s shrine room is used as Meditation Hall. This Meditation Center has given practical training to a large number of people in calmness as well as in insight meditations. Residential meditation courses are conducted for intensive training.

SUNDAY DISCOURSES
The Teaching of Buddha is explained in its ethical, psychological and philosophical aspects, and stress is laid on its applicability in daily life. Every Sunday from 9:30 to 11: 30 AM. and every third Sunday is meditation retreat. Abhidhamma classes are conducted on Saturdays and Sundays.

PUBLICATION
The Society published a large number of books and tracts in English and Kannada language. A monthly magazine DHAMMA in English and BUDDHA DHARMA in Kannada language (South Indian language of 45 million people of Karnataka state) are also brought out. The MBS also distributes books free of cost all over India.

LIBRARY
The library has a collection of over two thousand books, adequate for a detailed study of the Dhamma and to enable research in Buddhology. Books on other religious are also available for comparative study. Tipitaka is available in five different scripts.

BODHI TREE
When Acharya Buddharakkhita came to Bangalore in 1956 to establish the MBS, he brought with him a sapling of the Bodhi Tree from Buddha Gaya and planted it in the garden of the Society. This tree is as old as the Society and is an object of devotion.


VISHWA MAITRI STUPA
A granite Stupa, enshrining a relic of the Buddha. And symbolizing universal amity and goodwill has been constructed in the garden of MBS. Even architectural detail of Stupa represents a basic factor in the teaching of the Buddha.

BUDDHA JAYANTI (VESAK)
The Buddha Poornima in the month of May is an occasion for jubilation and festivity. The MBS celebrate it as a week-long program of humanitarian action culminating in the full-moon day to be observed with devotion and solemnity. The devotees undertake a code of conduct and spend much time in meditation. Monthly full-moon day celebrations are also observed like-wise with meditation, chanting and prayer. Devotees are offered Prasadam (Meals) and fruit distribution is done in hospitals with generosity of donors.

MAHABODHI AROGYA HOSPITAL
Located beside the sprawling slums of the outskirts of Bangalore, the hospital caters to the medical needs of the underprivileged residents of these slums.

MYSORE BRANCH
MBS has a branch in Mysore, 150 Kms from Bangalore with a small meditation center, a hostel for 65 students and primary school with two hundred children studying in it. A project has been planned to develop the school up to high school level.

MAHABODHI BURNS AND CASUALTY CENTER
Burns and casualty patients suffer intense agony and require very elaborate and expensive facilities for treatment. The Society has constructed a two-storied building and handed it over to the government to house and treat the patients of burns and other casualties. It is 200 bed hospital.

LEH BRANCH
In the Ladakh region of the Himalayas the Ladakh branch of MBS, the Mahabodhi International Meditation Center was founded in 1986 by Ven. Bhikkhu Sanghasena, senior disciple of Ven.Acharya Buddharakkhita. A variety of meditational exercises such as Vipassana, Tibetan, Zen and chan techniques are taught at the center. An additional attractions is the Milarepa Meditation and Trekking camp in beautiful, remote valleys of the Himalayas. The Center’s other activities include a residential school for poor Ladakhi children, a monastery for nuns, a library and research center, mobile health clinic, Karuna charitable hospital, home for aged, charity program and desert development project.

MAHABODHI WORLD PEACE BUDDHA TEMPLE
The Maha Bodhi World Peace Buddha Temple is a replica of the famous Bodhgaya Temple built by Emperor Ashoka over 2300 years ago. This temple, a landmark in Bangalore, is a unique institution in South India. It is a place of worship and meditation, a center of pilgrimage for devotees from all over India and abroad, and a repository of knowledge of Buddhism. It is a modern monument enshrining the best of Indian and Buddhist art and architecture.

FUTURE PLANS
Construction of school and hostel at Mysore for 200 children and school for 800 children, a guest house for visiting devotees, institute of Buddhology, establishing monastic institute and development of Arogya hospital
