National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), Calcutta, a college of Design, Management and Technology, a premier professional training institute, was established on 28th July, 1995 with its Headquarters at New Delhi, by Hon'ble Chief Minister of West Bengal, Sri Jyoti Basu,. Since then it has been catering to the needs of the rapid growing ready-made garment industry that has to meet the challenges of the global market. The Director of its Calcutta office is Sri KN Chatterjee and the Executive Director of the institution is Mr. LV Saptarishi, IAS who holds office at Delhi. Apart from the regular courses of Fashion Design(FD), Garment Manufacturing Training (GMT) and Leather Design Technology (LDT), NIFT, Calcutta conducts evening industrial programmes. In view to achieve its objectives, the institution at Calcutta has a well equipped Resource Centre comprising of good collection of books, Foreign and Indian Journals, Swatches, cassettes and Technical Slides, Samples of Yarns, Fashion Accessories, Special types of Dresses, Research and Review articles and Newspaper Clippings service for the benefit of faculties and students.
