Madurai Institute of Peace Science

vision and mission

Madurai Institute of Peace Science (MIPS) is a non-profit making organisation registered under society act. It came into existence in the year 1986 with an avowed aim of facilitating promotion of grass-root level institutions and initiative as a part of peace-building exercise. It's goal is to make villages vibrant with self-regenerative resources and vigorous decision-making bodies; and to turn village into a self-reliant resource center capable of meeting local employment needs and of checking the out-flow of local resources in the form of interest to the loan lending institutions and dependence on external agencies. In its effort at institutional building, it aims at reviving the decadent institutions and making it strong enough to attune to the changed demands of village self-reliance.

During these years, MIPS has established rapport with more than fifty villages organizing people into various decision-making bodies and making interventions bolstering local initiatives. Development education, teaching various aspects of rural life such as health, functional literacy, conflict-resolution, technology transfer, sustainable agriculture, organic manure, bio-pesticide and of renewable energies like bio-gas and smokeless chullah, institutional building empahsizing women's self-help group, disabled peoples self-help group and organic farmers club and finally vocational skill promotion training as a means of tackling problems of local employment are the major activites in which the organisation engaged. Besides this, training course on Peace-making to local youths, NGO network and associating with government's effort at peace-making in the areas disturbed by communal riots, have been MIPS other local networking ventures.
