
The Sri Mayapur Vikas Sangha (Mayapur Development Society) is a secular, non-government development organisation operating in the area of Sri Mayapur, District Nadia, West Bengal, India.Nadia District is one of the least developed districts of the state ranking near the bottom on most indicators. Sri Mayapur itself is a rural settlement in the Nabadwip Block of the district, about 105 kilometres north of Calcutta. It is significant as a popular pilgrimage centre within Eastern India and in recent years the numbers of visitors has increased dramatically.
SMVS currently operates projects involving health, education and sustainable livelihoods in three gram panchayats consisting of about 30 villages with 60,000 people. These projects include:
All Sri Mayapur Vikas Sangha programs involve development of village based development groups like Mahila Mandals.as well as some degree of financial participation by the communities they serve. Comprehensive reproductive and child health (RCH) case management for 20 villages involving 14 village health workers Ambulance service serving two panchayats Health outpost clinics in ten villages Promotion and capacity building for self-help groups (over 40 groups now operating in the area) supported by NABARD. SMVS is also involved in capacity building of urban communities through a UK DFID supported research project to evolve methodologies based on communities establishing their own indicators of sustainable development. A UNDP sponsored project on community financing of health through convergence of micro-credit, micro-enterprise and local self-governance initiatives An ICEF (India Canada Environment Facility) project involving community management and financing of projects for remediation of arsenic in drinking water. A NABARD supported project involving training and support for income generation activities and an action research project for sustainable agriculture in the region. The Organisation SMVS brings together nearly 20 years of experience in relief and charity in the area of Mayapur. Prior to the formation of SMVS the founding members of the society were active in various programs under the auspices of local religious institutions and public trusts. After working together informally since 1996, the Sri Mayapur Vikas Sangha was officially registered under the West Bengal Societies Registration Act in 1998.Although a new organisation, the vision, dedication and professionalism of the SMVS team have attracted the support of a number of international development agencies. Early support from the UNDP has been especially helpful in establishing a highly professional and progressive approach to sustainable development in the organisation.
