UNITED ELECTROTECHNOLOGIES
Embedded Data Communication and Networking Laboratory (EDCN)
Design and development of Communication Systems has experienced a major trend in recent years. With the adaptation of Internet, various communication devices are used in various parts of the network starting from network enabled PDAs, Pagers and central office switches etc. Most of the networking devices have a robust communication software functionality, which is used to communicate with other devices, as well as with a controlling entity.
The environment designed and developed by United Electrotechnologies, helps a student to understand the architecture of commonly used embedded controller and also helps him to absorb the skills for building effective communication techniques for point-to-point, point-to-multipoint and broadcast technologies.
The environment also helps to build the hardware-software co-design technique based on OSI layered architecture in physical, medium access control and logical link control layers through various communication media like RS232/ Telephone cable/ Fiber optic etc.
Experimental set-up

Experiments that can be performed with UE-EDCN laboratory:
1. Understanding Embedded controller Environment (Microcontroller and its interfacings)
The Microcontroller architecture experiments can be classified under following categories.
v Usage of Accumulator and bank registers for various Mathematical operations
v Usage of 8051 Internal Parallel port (Port-1)
v Direct and Indirect Register bank addressing in 80c51
v Accessing the 8051 Internal RAM
v Bit addressing in 8051
v Interfacing and access of External RAM for read and write operations.
2. Serial Communication (In Synchronous and Asynchronous mode), Point to Point Communication
3. PC to PC communication using Embedded controllers as Modems
4. Point to Multipoint Communication with RS485 physical layer
This section deals with the experiments for establishing the serial communication using 8051 internal UART in RS485 mode. This is basically multipoint-to-multipoint to communication, where in the communication is established b/w the three embedded nodes at time without any medium access control protocol.
5. Medium Access Control Implementation in Local Area Networking
This section deals with the experiments for establishing the serial communication using 8051 internal UART with RS485 bus. This is basically point-to-multipoint communication (unicast, multicast or broadcast), where in the communication is established b/w the three embedded nodes at time with any medium access control protocol IEEE802.4 (Token Bus Protocol). These experiments will cover
o Network Establishment
o Protocol Establishment
o Network Maintenance
o User-friendly interactive interface
o CAN communication between nodes using SJA1000 stand alone CAN controller interfaced to 8051 microcontroller
o Acceptance Filtering in CAN
o CAN communication between nodes one with SJA1000 stand alone CAN controller interfaced to 8051 microcontroller and other node with XAC3 16-bit microcontroller with in-built CAN.
o Home Automation Application
o Car Automation Application
6. Error and Flow control Mechanisms in Logical Link control layer
o Go Back N Implementation
o Selective Retransmission Implementation
