W. B. Vasantha was born on 24th December 1951 in the village of Worathur in South India. She had her schooling at the Christ King Convent in Madras. She graduated and postgraduated from the Stella Maris College, which is affiliated to the University of Madras with top honors in the field of Mathematical Sciences.

She began her career in 1974 as a Lecturer in the Field of Mathematical Sciences at the Auxilium College of Madras. She then began her mathematical research under the able guidance and professorship of Iqbal Unissa. She was conferred doctoral honors in 1980 by the University of Madras for her thesis in "lattice theory" which is a specialized branch of Mathematics.

She is at present an Associate Professor at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras, which is one of the premier research institutions in the country. Right from graduation she has been keenly involved in active scientific research in the Field of Mathematics and its various applications to serve the ever-increasing demands of humanity.

Various mathematical journals of repute globally have published 151 of her research papers. Her research papers exhibit the originality and innovative thinking that can be characterized as her trademark.

Apart from research publications she has made a permanent impact by participating in various mathematical conferences concerning mathematical research as a guest lecturer as well as a chairperson. She had presented nearly 64 research papers in conferences pertaining to various fields of Mathematics. Her style of presentation, eloquence, poise, expressiveness and command over the auidence have gained her a distinguished invitee for conferences all over the nation. She has successfully guided research scholars in various fields of pure and applied mathematics, which includes looprings, groupoids, lattices, communication theory and coding theory.

A teacher par excellence she enjoys a good rapport with her students. Her field of research at present includes Fuzzy Theory, Java programming, Transportation Problem in Metropolitan cities, polymer science and the organization and simulation of fluid circuits in rocket engines.

India's highest space research organization has expressed its keenness and desire to seek her assistance for guiding them mathematical aspects, launching its satellites and the usage of fluid circuits in its rocket engines.

She owes her success to the continuous encouragement by her husband Dr. K. Kandasamy and she has two daughters Meena and Kama.
